Seattle is the most educated major city in the US

Here is a link to the Seattle Times article… Some of the findings are below, from 2017 census.

  • 27% of people who live in Seattle have an advanced degree; Median earnings for Seattle resident with advanced degree was $80,000
  • Median earnings for a Seattle resident with a bachelor’s degree was $66,000
  • Median income for a Seattle resident who has not completed high school is $22,000.
  • Among Seattle residents, 59% of those born in Washington are college graduates, compared to 70% of those born in another state

Three initial thoughts…

  1. I take pride in being from the most educated city in the nation.
  2. What do these numbers look like when you break them down by race/ethnicity?
  3. As a teacher, I can’t help but think about all the students that are not being prepared to compete in this highly competitive, STEM heavy job market. As the city becomes more populated, it is also becoming more educated. What needs to be done to ensure that we are preparing the youth in the city to be able to compete for high paying jobs in Seattle?
This is just a visual of the major industries in the state of Washington.
