Listening to Drake is starting to feel like watching Floyd Mayweather fights used to feel. Drake breaks a streaming record, has some cuts, and is proclaimed one of the greatest rappers alive. Mayweather would break some pay-per-view records, show his elite skill, nothing more, and be considered the greatest boxer alive by his fans.
Both the fight and the album are usually lackluster, with Floyd fans claiming you have to really appreciate boxing to understand why he was impressive or some shit along those lines. You have to respect the consistency and their craft because both really are great at what they do.
Like Mayweather, I wouldn’t compare Drake to those in my top 5 rappers because he doesn’t do what they do. He is more of an entertainer than a rapper, and there is nothing wrong with that, just like Mayweather became more of a promoter than he was a boxer at the end of his great career.
We are focused on streams or pay-per-view sales rather than the substance. When I heard the latest Drake album, I know what I am going to get. When I watched Floyd fight, I knew what I was going to get. Rather than listen or watch anything new by either of them, I would rather listen to old Drake classics or watch older Mayweather fights where he still showed his great defensive skills and displayed a high level of skill on the attack.
I cant compare a dude singing half of his album to Jadakiss, especially not after Jada’s performance in the Versuz. It just seems highly disrespectful to real MCs that write all their best rhymes and command the stage with nothing more than a DJ.
Drake is great, dont get me wrong. I got Drake songs that will remain in rotation, but his music isn’t as great as some make it to be. His singing voice is average, and his bars may or may not be his. I put him in the same category as Britney Spears, Madonna, Beyonce, and Michael Jackson. Some may take offense, but it is not supposed to be a knock. I refuse to put him in the same category as Jay-Z, Biggie, and Nas. Does he have the ability? Yes, and at times he has said some shit lyrically that makes you double back on a bar, but that isn’t his thing, and that’s okay.
