Seattle, WA – The Burke Museum on the University of Washington campus will be hosting a dynamic and engaging Black History Lesson Plan Workshop on February 25th, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The event, organized by Thoughts Cost LLC CEO Anthony Washington, aims to bring together educators, administrators, and community members to explore the importance of Black history education and to share resources and strategies for incorporating Black history into teaching and learning.

The workshop will feature a lineup of distinguished guest speakers, including Dr. Alvin Logan, Anthropologist and Director of Education at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, and Tiffany Barber, Burke Mobile Educator. Dr. Logan and Barber will lead a hands-on object-based learning workshop, which will allow attendees to engage with artifacts from the Burke Museum’s collections and to explore the intersection of STEAM and culture.

Washington, the host, will present innovative strategies for incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into Black history education. He will emphasize the importance of creating safe and inclusive learning environments that promote respect, empathy, and cultural competence, and will highlight the significance of using Black history and culture as a lens for SEL strategies.

The workshop will also include a keynote speech by Dr. William White, Director of My Brother’s Teacher, which will focus on the power of education to promote social justice, equity, and anti-racism.

Throughout the workshop, attendees will be provided with opportunities to network, share resources, and reflect on their own practices and experiences. Lunch will be provided, featuring a menu of vegan Sambusa, Jamaican Patties, Lumpia, fruit, and charcuterie boards, which will allow attendees to engage in conversation and build community.

The Black History Lesson Plan Workshop promises to be an informative, engaging, and inspiring event, which will provide attendees with the knowledge, skills, and tools to promote Black history education in their classrooms, schools, and communities.
