The Black History Lesson Plan Workshop held at the Burke Museum on February 25th, 2023, brought educators, administrators, and community members together to explore the importance of Black history education and share resources and strategies for incorporating Black history into teaching and learning.

Thoughts Cost LLC CEO Anthony Washington organized the event. Anthony Washington presented strategies for incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into Black history education, emphasizing the importance of creating safe and inclusive learning environments that promote respect, empathy, and cultural competence. It featured distinguished guest speakers, including Dr. Alvin Logan and Tiffany Barber from the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Dr. Logan and Barber led a hands-on object-based learning workshop, allowing attendees to engage with museum artifacts and explore the intersection of STEAM and culture.

Dr. William L. White, Director of My Brother’s Teacher, gave a powerful message about Black male educators, speaking to the fact that only 2% of k-12 classrooms are made up of Black male educators. He emphasized the importance of seeing Black male educators as great teachers rather than primary disciplinarians. He called on the education community to work towards greater diversity and inclusion in the classroom.

Attendees could network, share resources, and reflect on their practices and experiences throughout the workshop. Lunch was provided, featuring a menu of vegan Sambusa, Jamaican Patties, Lumpia, fruit, and charcuterie boards, which allowed attendees to engage in conversation and build community.
Overall, the Black History Lesson Plan Workshop was informative, engaging, and inspiring, providing attendees with the knowledge, skills, and tools to promote Black history education in their classrooms, schools, and communities. Attendees were eligible to receive clock hours and received a certificate of completion. The event truly celebrated Black history and culture and demonstrated the power of collaboration and community to effect positive change.
