Dear predominantly white organizations working in the community and receiving grants,
If you have to find a Melanated business or non-profit to carry out the work because your organization cannot relate, you are perpetuating the paternalism many of us. Melanated individuals thought we left behind when we ventured from white institutions to establish our own.
Support is one thing, but constantly losing out to these organizations, only to be contacted to do their work, is unreasonable and selfish.
While I appreciate healthy competition, it’s important to recognize that you are limiting the amount of funding, Melanated organizations can receive by acting as gatekeepers.
If your organization doesn’t have the necessary team, consider allowing Melanated organizations that do access to 100k grants rather than offering them a 20k contract with your organization.
Let’s work together to empower Melanated organizations and create a more equitable environment.
