Social-Emotional Gems found in tv shows

I will start highlighting old and new shows that can be used as learning tools for social-emotional learning.

My 9-year-old and 11-year-old children have discovered the tv show Smart Guy on Disney. It starred Jason Weaver, Omar Gooding, and Taj Mowry. As my kids watch the show, I start watching it with them and realize that the Smart Guy taught many life lessons.

It is an excellent show for children and adolescents to watch. It touches on so many different topics. If you are working with your kid at home, this show can be used as a guide to building social-emotional learning skills.

Although it came out years ago, they touched on relevant topics today.

Topics like online dating, being accepted by peers, being yourself, controlling your ego, sports and the toll they can take on relationships, women’s rights, and so many more.

Pay attention to what your kids watch. A supporting question or a story related to a topic covered on the show can turn a good entertaining episode into a lesson your child can use for life.
