We are thrilled to announce that Gerald Rhoden, a dedicated and innovative educator at Mark Twain Elementary in the Federal Way School District, has been named the Thoughts Cost Teacher of the Year! Gerald’s exceptional commitment to his students, innovative teaching methods, and deep engagement with the community make him a truly outstanding educator.
A Dedication to Student Success
Gerald Rhoden has been teaching for six years, with experience in kindergarten and second grade, and he will be moving into third grade this year. His passion for teaching stems from a desire to close the achievement gap academically and socially. Gerald’s interest in every student extends beyond the classroom, ensuring they are seen, heard, and supported in their educational journey.
Inspiring and Supporting Students
One of the most remarkable aspects of Gerald’s teaching is his ability to connect with his students on a personal level. As a black male teacher, Gerald has profoundly impacted his black male students, many of whom look up to him as a positive role model. Gerald’s presence provides these students with a figure they can relate to, especially those who may not have fathers in their lives.
Innovative Teaching Methods
Gerald’s innovative “play dates” every Friday are a highlight of his classroom management strategy. Using Star Dollars, he encourages positive behavior and creates a joyful learning environment where students are excited to come to school and engage in activities. This approach has improved classroom behavior and fostered a sense of teamwork and responsibility among students.
Making a Difference Beyond the Classroom
Gerald’s involvement in the local community extends beyond his teaching duties. He created a track team at Mark Twain Elementary, turning recess into an exciting and engaging time for students. This initiative has been so successful that it has garnered the support and enthusiasm of faculty, staff, and students from all grades, building stronger relationships within the school community.
Gerald is also known for his advocacy efforts. He consistently uses his own resources to ensure students have what they need and takes extra steps, such as walking students home, to ensure their safety and well-being. His dedication to supporting students and advocating for their needs is a testament to his commitment to making a positive impact in their lives.
Recognized for Excellence
Gerald’s exceptional work has not gone unnoticed. He has been recognized by the superintendent, observed in his classroom for his innovative teaching methods, and invited to be a mentor for the Washington Education Association (WEA). His role as a dean on Fridays further highlights his leadership and ability to connect with students across the school.
Words from Gerald
Reflecting on his journey, Gerald shares, “Closing the achievement gap academically and socially inspired me to become a teacher. This year, I was fortunate enough to also be a dean on Fridays. I was able to build relationships with students outside the four walls of my classroom, which has been incredibly rewarding.”
A Call to Action
As we celebrate Gerald Rhoden’s achievement as the Thoughts Cost Teacher of the Year, we are reminded of the importance of supporting educators who go above and beyond. Gerald’s story is a powerful example of how dedicated teachers can significantly impact their students’ lives and communities.
